The new rules make it easier to qualify, not harder. They apply to every application in process on March 31, 2026, and every application sent after that date. If you qualified before, you still qualify.
Option 1: Use your better tax year
You (and your co-signer, if any) only need to meet the minimum income in one of the two tax years before you apply.
Example: A family of 4 needs $56,724. You earned $58,000 in 2024 but only $48,000 in 2025 after a job change. You qualify by using your 2024 income.
Option 2: Add your parent's income
If you (and your co-signer) earned at least 75% of the minimum income last year, your visiting parent's or grandparent's income can cover the rest. Your parents must show that this income, such as a pension, will continue while they are in Canada.
Example: A family of 2 needs $38,002, so 75% is $28,502. You earned $32,000, which is $6,002 short. If your parent receives a pension of at least $6,002 a year, you qualify. If you earned less than $28,502, your parent's income cannot be added.
